The Grossglockner Ascent – A Bold New Phase in Alpine Quest

March 6, 2025 – Today, on Day 6 of their Alpine Quest since departing Vienna on bikes, the team took their journey to new heights—both literally and figuratively. Swapping their bikes for skis, they embarked on the bold challenge of summiting Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak at a towering 3,798 meters (12,461 feet). This marked the first day of the skimo phase of the adventure, and what better way to kick off this new phase with a bang than by conquering Grossglockner? This ascent became a defining moment, a true testament to their unwavering determination and resilience.

The Arrival of Sophie & Early Preparations
The team’s momentum kicked into high gear with the arrival of Sophie, the third member of the team, who brought along all the necessary ski gear. After settling in at Lucknerhaus, the team prepped their equipment and laid out their strategy for the ascent. The evening was spent finalizing preparations, and the team settled in early to rest for the challenging day ahead.

A 5 A.M. Wake-Up and an Early Start
The next day began early. At 5 a.m., the team woke up in the dark, gearing up for the difficult climb. Athlete Fréderique Rol was there to see them off and offer her encouragement. The temperature was bitterly cold, and the winds were fierce—an indication of the challenge that lay ahead. Nevertheless, the team was determined to push through the elements.

The Ascent to Grossglockner – Facing Harsh Conditions
As they made their way up Grossglockner, the conditions proved to be more difficult than anticipated. The snow was mostly bad, making the ascent all the more challenging. The cold and wind added to the strain, and it was clear that the conditions weren’t ideal for ski mountaineering, especially for this time of year.

A Statement of Determination
Summiting Grossglockner wasn’t just about reaching the top—it was about making a statement. By pushing themselves to summit Austria’s highest peak, the team set the tone for the rest of the journey, proving that they were ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Aurélie Gonin, our incredible film director, followed the team up to the summit and captured every moment, demonstrating not just her dedication but the essence of Alpine Quest—capturing the story and sharing it with the world.

The Descent and Much-Needed Rest
After conquering the summit, the team made their way down to the first skimo cabin of the journey. It was a much-needed break, allowing them to rest and recuperate before continuing this challenging phase of the adventure. The skimo phase had only just begun, and each day would bring new challenges and new triumphs.

Looking Ahead – The Journey Continues
The ascent of Grossglockner was just the beginning. While it wasn’t planned initially, it set the tone for the team’s approach—bold, resilient, and unwavering. As they continue on this epic adventure, the team is more determined than ever to face the challenges ahead.
