The First Female-Led Alpine Crossing

From Vienna to Monaco, Loubna and her team of elite female athletes traversed 1600 km across the Alps, scaling 67,000 meters of elevation through rugged mountain terrain. For 54 days, they cycled, skied, and ran across 47 glaciers, battling unpredictable weather while raising awareness about climate change and water preservation.

Understanding the Melting Alps

During the Alpine Quest traverse, the team in collaboration with CREALP (Center for Research on the Alpine Environment) explored how the rapid retreat of glaciers is reshaping the Alps and our relationship with water, energy, and life in the mountains.

Since 2000, the world’s glaciers have lost 5% of their volume and in Switzerland, 40%. These ancient ice reservoirs are more than iconic landscapes: they’re vital sources of freshwater, climate archives, and lifelines for ecosystems.

Through field observations and scientific insights provided by CREALP, Alpine Quest highlighted how :

Glacier melt contributes to rising sea levels and disrupts mountain water cycles.
Rivers like the Rhône face shrinking summer flows, threatening agriculture, energy, and biodiversity.
Hydropower systems must adapt as seasonal water patterns shift and sediment loads increase.
Alpine ecosystems and microorganisms hidden beneath the ice are disappearing before we even discover them.
Communities and tourism are forced to reinvent how they live with and without snow.

Our journey through the Alps revealed a simple truth: glaciers are the silent witnesses of climate change their retreat tells the story of our time.
